Last year, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, though, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed version promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of Putin. This character is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show released last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with him to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with no shortage of candidates. Central to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist featured various figures, including an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his clandestine activities in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by the actor's debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. Its omission of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
