Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
