Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

Last Thursday Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration said the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with insiders suggesting Trump had urged him to cede significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the current line of contact.

The Russian government was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the only topic that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
