Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
