Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
