Forecasters are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Transport is anticipated to be impacted.
• People have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was likely to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely key.
