Outrage Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Backlash
Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a appalling and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She referenced previous comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
