Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
