The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to live in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, did not confirm this decision promptly following his victory in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of dedicating my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, it will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Campaign Controversy
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
