The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
