In a significant diplomatic effort, Donald Trump’s special envoy is slated to meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and numerous leaders from Europe in Berlin over the coming days, while Washington advocates for a concrete plan to conclude the ongoing conflict.

Diplomatic Talks and Truce Planning

Germany confirmed it will facilitate American and Kyiv delegations for weekend talks regarding a possible truce, before a broader meeting with European leaders and President Zelenskyy scheduled for Monday. In a national address, Zelenskyy stated the upcoming meeting with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “Most importantly, I will be holding talks with envoys of President Trump, and there will additionally be discussions with our allies in Europe, with numerous leaders, about the basis of a lasting peace – a political agreement to terminate the war,” he noted.

Kremlin Demands for a Truce

In parallel, Russian foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov restated that Russia would exclusively agree to a cessation of hostilities once Ukrainian forces leave parts of the eastern oblast they currently hold. Ushakov added that Russian police and interior ministry forces would be stationed in sections of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas should the area becomes a DMZ under a potential peace plan – a stipulation widely seen as unacceptable for Kyiv.

Nighttime Strikes Target Ukraine's Infrastructure

In a separate escalation, Russia targeted multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, concentrating on the country’s power and maritime infrastructure, per President Zelenskyy. He indicated the barrage involved in excess of 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 rockets. With temperatures near zero degrees, Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, reported more than a civilians were left without electricity.

Additionally, an attack on the port city of Odesa caused grain silos being set ablaze, according to Ukrainian deputy prime minister Oleksiy Kuleba. Regional officials stated that two people were wounded in strikes on the wider region.

Security and Humanitarian Developments

Amid mounting anxieties about the Russian threat, Berlin said it will send a team of engineers to Poland to aid in a project to strengthen the country’s eastern border. Poland, a staunch ally of Ukraine, revealed intentions last year to secure a long stretch of its frontier. The main role of the German soldiers will be “engineering activities,” a military spokesperson clarified.

In a different event, approximately 480 passengers were evacuated from a rail service traveling between the city in Poland of Przemysl and Kyiv following police responded to a report concerning a potential danger. Nobody was injured, and officials did not elaborate on the nature of the threat. Poland's authorities remain on heightened alert since multiple attempts to disrupt rail traffic on the line connecting Warsaw to the Ukrainian border.

Elsewhere, Ukraine’s navy accused Russian forces of intentionally attacking a commercial ship from Turkey transporting sunflower oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The statement reported the vessel ‘VIVA’ was struck but continued on its journey, with none of the 11 crew injured.

Additionally, Ukraine welcomed back 114 prisoners released by Belarus on Saturday, according to the country’s PoW coordination centre. The freed captives are to get healthcare, and any nationals of Belarus who wish will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
