Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
